Online Business Listings 101

Online Business Listings 101

Online business listings are an important asset for any company that aims to target local consumers. There are plenty of reasons your local business should be taking advantage of the online business listing services, and we are going to dive into some of those reasons for you. We are also going to go over which of these fall under our managed services, and what steps you can take as part of a cooperative approach to improving your business’s web presence.

Why Online Business Listings Matter

Google and even Bing may be obvious places to list your business but there are more services out there that deserve your attention when it comes to online business listings. If you aren’t utilizing these services, your business is invisible to a lot of consumers that are looking for your products or services. There is a lot of work being poured into competing with the big brand search engines for the love and attention of local consumers. You can read more about that in a Search Engine Land article, “YP Wants To Compete Directly With Google And Yelp In Local“.

While the focus of this article is to get clients to look at a wider variety of online business listing services, it is important to understand how the more well-known services like Google and Bing depend on these other services. The big search engines use the information gathered from other online business listings to compare the information. These are known as citations and the accuracy of them have an impact on the ranking for your listing on the search engines. You can read more about citations and SEO in yet another Search Engine Land article, “Local citations are dead; long live local citations!“.

Does Gap Creek Media Manage My Listing?

We manage listings that are provided by the major Search Engines. There are simply too many services that provide online business listings for us to manage all of them. To ensure competitive services and pricing, we focus on business listings for Google and Bing.

This doesn’t mean you’re on your own. We are more than happy to provide assistance and support to our clients when it comes to their business listings. Please feel free to contact us at any time to discuss your online business listings.

Recommended Online Business Listings

We are always available to our clients that have questions about which listings to sign up for. The industry of your business will determine which online business listing services are the right fit. For example, businesses that cater to tourists and travelers should certainly sign up with TripAdvisor.

There are two services that we don’t manage but that we recommend all of our clients sign up for. Yelp is a popular service and is used by other listing services. Bing incorporates some information from Yelp as well. YP (Yellow Pages online) is another service we recommend signing up for. Both of these services are growing in popularity and working harder than ever to compete with the major search engines.

Don’t List Just Anywhere

Don’t create listings just to create listings. Listing on websites with poor site authority or link farms are just a few ways to damage your SEO. Don’t sign up for every available place to list your business. If you are unsure whether or not to sign up for a listing, please feel free to contact us to discuss your options. Accuracy Of Information

I want to leave you with one thought to keep at the forefront when completing your online business listings. “Accuracy Of Information”. When I say accurate, I also mean consistent. Inaccurate and inconsistent information about your business will negatively impact your SEO. It will also lead to a dead end for consumers trying to connect with your business. This means your business’s phone number, physical address, web address, and hours of operation.

I know there is a lot to read here, especially if you followed the recommended reading along the way. I hope it helps you understand how listings impact your business on the web. Until our next post….
