This is an alert to our clients about a scam from Internet Domain Name Services that may come to you in an email or snail mail. The scam is based on your domain name. For those of you that don’t know what that is, it’s the web address for your website(s). For example, the domain name for this website is gapcreekmedia.com.
iDNS sends urgent email and letters to customers, using domain name registration information, which is public information. This is how they get your information. You can opt for private registration which uses spoofed information which we at Gap Creek Media do not advise or condone because we believe in transparency and accountability. Accurate information also provides you an avenue to prove of ownership of your website to others.
Internet Domain Name Services Engages In Deceptive Marketing Practices
Internet Domain Name Services relies on implying that they control your domain name and that you must pay them to keep your website. The disclaimers they provide that states they don’t actually own or control your domain is worded in a way that does not make clear that the mail is actually just advertising. This is deceptive marketing. They do not own nor control any assets for our clients. All of our clients have their domain name registered with Godaddy, and if they have it registered with another company, we require clients to transfer their domain registration to Godaddy.
DO NOT PAY ANY MONEY TO iDNS
We also advise that you do not reply to their emails or letters. If you need more information about your domain name, please feel free to contact us at any time and we can provide you with information and documentation about any of your internet assets, domain name or otherwise.
